Large antique carved and hand painted wooden horse figure from Rajastahan, India. Rajasthan is famed for its exquisite woodcraft.

This large, hand painted wooden horse is beautiful and highly decorative, Rajhastan horses such as this are used in Rajhastan for ceremonies and festivals and are often seen decorating floats, magnificent entranceway's etc. I have heard they are meant to bring luck, fortune and fertility and of course are a nod to Rajhastans majestic, historic, cultured and colourful heritage.

Rajhastani artisans have a tradition for making beautiful hand carved and painted works of art, these skills have been handed down through the generations and they are still creating beautiful items today. He is in good condition overall with a wonderful patina of age including some scrapes on the paint work and the odd chip here and there including a few chips on the ears. He is made of teak wood. He is put together in various sections and you can see the seams are visible (which is normal), to see the join lines. Beautiful patina.

It is rare to find a Rajhastani horse of this size and quality, he is a work of art and very architectural and sculptural. He is a teriffic decorative interior piece for display or photographic purposes.

In a traditional wedding ceremony the bride arrives on a lavishly decorated horse, and the groom's family will give a gift of a replica horse to the bride's family as part of the dowry. This piece is in amazing condition for it's age.
